Comparing a salaried job with an hourly one, or checking what a raise means per hour, starts with the same conversion. This free salary to hourly calculator turns an annual salary into hourly pay, or an hourly wage into a yearly salary, and shows the amount for every common pay period. Set your own hours and paid weeks if you do not work a standard 40-hour week.
Salary to hourly calculator
Gross pay before taxes and deductions. A standard full-time year is 40 hours × 52 weeks = 2,080 hours.
Key takeaways
- A full-time year is 40 hours × 52 weeks = 2,080 hours.
- A $60,000 salary is about $28.85 an hour, $2,307.69 every two weeks or $5,000 a month.
- $25 an hour full time is $52,000 a year.
- Shortcut: double the hourly rate and add three zeros for a rough annual salary ($25 → about $50,000).
How to convert salary to hourly
Hourly pay = annual salary ÷ (hours per week × paid weeks per year)
$60,000 ÷ (40 × 52) = $60,000 ÷ 2,080 = $28.85 an hour. The other way around, hourly pay × 2,080 gives the annual amount for a full-time job: $25 × 2,080 = $52,000.
If you work 37.5 hours a week, the year has 1,950 hours, and the same $60,000 salary is $30.77 an hour. If you take two weeks of unpaid leave, use 50 paid weeks.

Biweekly vs. semimonthly pay
Biweekly means every two weeks, 26 paychecks a year, so two months each year have three paychecks. Semimonthly means twice a month, 24 paychecks, usually on fixed dates such as the 15th and the last day. The annual pay is the same, but each semimonthly check is a little larger: $2,500 instead of $2,307.69 on a $60,000 salary.
Salary vs. hourly: what else to compare
- Overtime: under federal law, nonexempt employees get at least time and a half for hours over 40 in a workweek. Many salaried employees are exempt and get no overtime pay.
- Paid time off and holidays: a salary usually covers them; hourly jobs may not pay for time not worked.
- Benefits: health insurance, retirement matching and bonuses can be worth thousands of dollars a year.
- Take-home pay: these figures are gross pay. The paycheck tax calculator shows what is left after taxes, and freelancers should use the freelance hourly rate calculator, which adds the costs an employer would cover.
